Why Your DIY Face Cream Separated (And How to Fix It)
Have you ever put your heart into creating the perfect face cream, only to find it separated or covered with a layer of water the next day? This happens to every formulator. The problem isn't you — it's the science of emulsions. Here is why it happens, and a simple protocol so your creams come out stable every time.

The #1 reason: incompatible phases
Water and oil do not mix without an emulsifier. If you do not use enough emulsifier — Olivem 1000, Polawax or a similar complete emulsifying wax — the phases will separate, usually within a day.
The working rule is 3–6% emulsifier calculated on the total weight of the formula. Below that you are relying on luck; above it the cream turns waxy and draggy.
The temperature gap mistake
Both phases must be at the same temperature when you combine them — ideally 70–72 °C. If the oil phase is hot and the water phase is cold, the emulsion will fail.
This is the failure that fools people, because the cream looks perfect while it is warm and breaks overnight as it cools. Use a thermometer on both beakers, not on one.
Not using a broad-spectrum preservative
Anything containing water needs a preservative. Without one, bacteria and mould grow, and their by-products break the emulsion down from the inside.
Use a broad-spectrum system such as Geogard ECT or Geogard 221 at the dosage the supplier states, typically around 1%. Check that your final pH sits inside the preservative's working range — many stop working outside it.
How to rescue a separated cream
This works for mild separation caught early. If the cream smells off, has changed colour, or you are unsure how long it sat, discard it. A re-blended contaminated cream is still contaminated.
- Warm the separated cream in a water bath back to 70 °C.
- Add 1–2% additional emulsifier.
- Mix with a high-shear mixer for 3–4 minutes.
- Cool while stirring gently.
