Why is my hot process soap crumbly?

Short answer

It was overcooked and lost moisture. Knead in warm water, milk or aloe juice a teaspoon at a time until it's like putty.

Explanation

Stirring during the initial gel can also make the texture grainy. Leave the batter covered and untouched while it gels from the edges inward. The soap is done after about 45–60 minutes, when it looks like translucent, waxy mashed potatoes and a small dab diluted with distilled water reads pH 8–10.

What to do

  • Press the cooked soap firmly into molds to remove air pockets.
  • Smooth the top with a spatula moistened with water or alcohol.
