Why did my soap accelerate?

Short answer

Certain ingredients and conditions speed up trace: some fragrance oils, citrus essential oils, sugars, milks, honey, juices, a water discount and high-coconut recipes.

Explanation

The book lists the usual accelerators. Fragrance oils that aren't tested for cold process (often those made for candles) can make the batter thicken suddenly. Citrus essential oils speed things up. Sugars, milks, honey and juices add heat. A water discount (less water) and high-coconut recipes trace fast by nature: 100% coconut soap can trace in 30–90 seconds.

If the batter is thickening too fast to swirl or layer, the cause is almost always in that list.

What to do

  • Use fragrance oils labeled safe for cold process soap, and test new ones in a small batch.
  • Soap cooler and blend in short bursts when using sugars, milk or honey.
  • Stop at thin trace and pour immediately with fast-moving recipes; individual molds help.
